Cellulite is a blemish that involves subcutaneous fatty tissue and the fibers of the connective tissue. Discover more about anticellulite treatment by Eleana Ferrari.
Connective fibers, so-called “shoots”, cross the adipose tissue and keep the skin anchored to the muscles. In women, the “shoots” are arranged perpendicular to the skin surface, while in men they are positioned at 45 °. This is the main reason why cellulite blemishes are more visible in women than in men.
The situation that is created is the following. The cells of the adipose tissue undergo alterations and swell until they burst and pour the fat into the surrounding tissue. This accumulation of fat compresses between one shoot and the next, which at the same time pull the skin down. The anchor points become visible forming “holes”, and the skin takes the unwanted shape of an “orange peel” or “mattress”.
If the shoots are not perpendicular to the skin, as it happens with men, this effect is practically invisible: this is why cellulite is a predominantly female imperfection.
In addition to the accumulation of fat, the same effect can be created with the accumulation of liquids (the so-called “water retention”) and for the sagging of the skin in some points.
The aesthetic doctor, once the skin tissue has been examined and the characteristics of cellulite evaluated, will be able to establish the most effective anticellulite treatment protocol. Using treatments that aesthetic medicine has developed and made increasingly effective over the years.
