Skin Spots: Why They Appear and How to Treat Them

Coming back from vacation doesn’t always leave behind only good memories and a golden complexion. In fact, as your tan fades, small dark shadows begin to appear on your face and décolleté, making the skin look less even. These are skin spots—a common blemish that doesn’t only affect people over forty, but also younger women, due to hormonal, genetic, and environmental factors.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF SPOTS

Not all skin spots are the same, and addressing them properly requires a professional assessment.

“For esample Melasma is the type most linked to hormones,” explains Dr. Elena Ferrari. “It appears as irregular patches in a brownish-gray color, mainly on the forehead, cheeks, upper lip, or chin. It often occurs during pregnancy or in those taking birth control pills, and it worsens with sun exposure. To combat it, a consistent approach is essential: daily protection with high filters and depigmenting cosmetics containing tranexamic acid, vitamin C, or niacinamide.”

By contrast,  solar lentigines, on the other hand, are signs of prolonged sun exposure without adequate protection. “These are brown spots with well-defined edges, more frequent after the age of forty, especially on the face, hands, and décolleté. Prevention remains the most powerful tool: using broad-spectrum sunscreens year-round, even in the city, helps slow their development.”

In addition, another common type is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which may result from irritation, waxing, harsh exfoliation, photosensitizing perfumes, or minor skin trauma. “In this case, the spots can be superficial and temporary, but they often persist,” Ferrari continues. “Gentle, targeted treatments are needed to reduce them without causing further inflammation.”

THE MOST EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS

Aesthetic medicine offers innovative protocols that penetrate deeply without surgery. On the one hand, they stimulate collagen; on the other hand, they boost cell renewal. As a result, the latest technologies help counter the signs of aging and restore freshness and vitality to the face. Among the most promising treatments are Luminage, which regenerates the skin in all dimensions; Ablaze Radiofrequency, a non-invasive lifting that firms and tones; and PRX T33, a needle-free skin biostimulation that delivers immediate radiance. The specialist will determine the most suitable treatment and how to combine them.

LUMINAGE FOR SKIN REGENERATION

As we age, collagen fibers tend to weaken and lose firmness. The new LUMINAGE protocol works deep within the skin, stimulating fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin, while also encouraging the contraction of existing fibers. In the end, the result is more elastic, toned, and youthful-looking skin. Moreover, after the stimulation phase, the treatment is completed with a buffered peel that works from the surface inward, enhancing radiance, evenness, and skin texture.

ABLAZE RADIOFREQUENCY: THE SCALPEL-FREE LIFTING

This cutting-edge treatment uses electromagnetic waves to gently heat the deeper layers of the skin. Through this process, it stimulates collagen production, improves circulation, and promotes tissue regeneration, restoring firmness and elasticity. It’s a non-invasive procedure with no downtime that delivers a natural lifting effect without altering facial features. What’s more, the results, which are gradual and long-lasting, become more visible in the weeks following the treatment and continue to improve over time. Ideal for the face, neck, and décolleté, and also suitable for areas such as the arms, abdomen, or thighs, Ablaze Radiofrequency is recommended both for those looking to prevent aging and those wishing to reduce existing wrinkles and sagging.

PRX T33, THE GENTLE PEEL

This is a non-invasive, needle-free, and painless treatment based on 33% trichloroacetic acid (TCA), combined with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and 5% kojic acid. It is a valid alternative to injectable biorevitalization. Here are the steps of the treatment:

  • Skin preparation with a deep massage using PRX P-Solution, formulated with gentle cleansers and calibrated acids to exfoliate, hydrate, and cleanse the skin
  • Application of 33% TCA, which penetrates the epidermis and triggers the skin regeneration process
  • Neutralization to rebalance the skin’s pH
  • Application of a post-treatment cream, which is then provided to the patient

The session lasts about half an hour, and you can return to your daily activities immediately afterward ““It’s recommended for both women and men of any age,” says Ferrari. “It hydrates and nourishes the skin, stimulates cellular activity and the synthesis of collagen and elastin. Hydration draws water into the tissues, resulting in smoother, plumper skin. Results are visible from the first session—the skin appears more radiant and less wrinkled. For longer-lasting effects, sessions should be repeated every 2–3 weeks, for at least 4 treatments.”

DAILY SKINCARE ROUTINE

In addition to professional treatments, your daily skincare routine plays a crucial role. Gentle cleansing prepares the skin to better absorb subsequent treatments, while serums containing vitamin C, light exfoliating acids, or niacinamide help even out skin tone. At night, depigmenting creams or drops with tranexamic acid, arbutin, or low-dose retinol are best, as they promote cell renewal without irritating the skin. Don’t forget targeted patches for the most stubborn spots—they release concentrated actives overnight. During the day, a tone-evening cream and, most importantly, a high-protection sunscreen are essential to maintain results and prevent new discoloration.

Although each spot has its own cause, one thing remains clear: consistency. Daily sun protection and a targeted, regular skincare routine are the first steps toward brighter, more even, and better-protected skin.
