Anyone with oily skin knows the struggle: as temperatures and humidity rise, shine appears quickly on the face, imperfections pop up, and makeup never seems to last long enough. But there’s a clear reason behind this overproduction of sebum: high temperatures stimulate the activity of sebaceous glands, disrupting the skin’s balance and promoting the development of enlarged pores, blackheads, and acne.
ESSENTIAL RULES
“Oily skin is very common in young people, especially during adolescence and early adulthood,” explains Dr. Eleana Ferrari. “This occurs mainly due to hormonal reasons: during puberty, androgen hormone levels—such as testosterone—increase, stimulating the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum. However, oily skin can also appear during menopause. In this phase, estrogen levels drop sharply, while androgens remain relatively stable. This imbalance can affect sebum production. Managing oily skin in the summer therefore requires a targeted approach that considers both the actual needs of the skin and environmental conditions. It ranges from proper cleansing and sebum-regulating ingredients to smart hydration and adequate sun protection, all the way to specialized treatments performed by an aesthetic doctor.”
SOLUTIONS TO FIGHT OILY SKIN
Targeted cosmetic solutions can help regulate sebaceous gland activity, reduce excess sebum, improve the shiny appearance typical of oily skin, and visibly refine skin texture through a gradual normalization of keratinization and a reduction in the apparent size of pores. Daily cleansing should be gentle—overly aggressive products dry out the skin and worsen the problem.
- Daily cleansing, morning and evening: light mousses are recommended, capable of removing excess sebum without stripping the skin. It’s better to opt for formulas containing Perfluorocarbon and its derivatives—compounds that can deliver oxygen directly into the skin tissue.
- Peeling: once or twice a week, preferably with salicylic acid (BHA) or glycolic acid (AHA); it helps unclog pores without irritating the skin.
EFFECTIVE INGREDIENTS
- Mandelic acid: a gentle alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), ideal for sensitive skin. It exfoliates softly, brightens, and evens out skin tone.
- Salicylic acid: a lipophilic beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), perfect for impure skin. It penetrates the pores, reduces pimples and blackheads, and has anti-inflammatory effects.
- Hyaluronic acid: hydrates without weighing the skin down, helping to prevent rebound sebum production.
- Azelaic acid: offers sebum-regulating, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.
- Purifying masks: based on green clay, salicylic acid, and niacinamide, these help regulate sebum and visibly shrink pores, leaving the face matte and even-toned.
• Daily sun protection (SPF 30+ to 50): essential to prevent collagen breakdown and worsening of oily skin conditions.
• Use sunscreens with physical filters, also called mineral filters, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These create a barrier that reflects UV rays and are gentler on the skin. They do not increase sebum production and, unlike chemical filters, help maintain a matte appearance.
• A balanced diet rich in antioxidants (fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, whole grains, and legumes), drink plenty of water (at least 2 liters per day), and avoid alcohol and smoking.

PICO-CARBON PEEL: AN EFFECTIVE TREATMENT
“One of the most innovative and promising treatments in aesthetic medicine is the Pico-Carbon Peel—a non-invasive and effective solution,” says Dr. Ferrari. “It’s perfect for managing oily skin, reducing the visibility of enlarged pores, and improving skin texture. The procedure combines two synergistic technologies: a mask made with activated carbon that, once applied, deeply absorbs sebum and impurities, and a picosecond laser that emits ultra-fast pulses to remove the carbon along with dead cells and debris trapped in the pores.”
How it works
The treatment acts on multiple levels:
• Deep cleansing: the laser removes the carbon, carrying away impurities and sebum trapped in the pores.
• Collagen stimulation: the laser’s energy activates skin fibroblasts, improving elasticity and tightening the skin’s texture.
MAIN BENEFITS
“The Pico-Carbon Peel is a fast treatment—typically 30–45 minutes—with no downtime,” the expert continues. “It’s well tolerated, even by sensitive skin: at most, one might feel mild warmth or tingling. It’s non-invasive, and normal activities can be resumed immediately afterward. Visible results are noticeable after the first session, and with a full cycle of 4–6 treatments, there’s a significant reduction in pore size, and the skin becomes smoother, more radiant, and even. The skin appears immediately more refined, soft, almost silky.”
