Description

In the field of aesthetic medicine, lip augmentation is one of the most frequent requests, and at the same time of the most feared treatments. We call it Miofill. Unlike years ago, today it is no longer necessary to undergo invasive surgical operations to be able to obtain a satisfactory aesthetic result.

There are several techniques that are currently used for the volumetric augmentation of the lips: fillers, injectable filling materials, threads, solid implants and local flaps.

The filler has been the most common treatment in recent years. Thanks to the discovery of new fillers, based on hyaluronic acid, it is possible to obtain a better result than those obtained with the use of “less soft” products. What is important for the success of a good treatment, in addition to visible – but not exaggerated – volumetric increase, is the naturalness of the lips, which must not fail.

Using fillers to reshape the lips allows you to:

  • obtain a fuller mouth;
  • rejuvenate the lips ;
  • redraw the lip profile, correcting any asymmetries and defects;
  • design a mouth more in harmony with one’s face and features.
  • obtain a lip lift

Indications

Lip fillers are filling materials, of natural and / or synthetic derivation, which are injected with the aid of thin needles inside the labial mucosa or along its contour. Before proceeding with the inoculation of the filler, the specialist must take into account the biological and chemical-physical characteristics of the substance used. Furthermore, it is essential to deepen with the patient the information related to the anatomical area to be treated, the type of imperfection to be corrected and the medical-legal aspects (medical record and informed consent), in order to obtain the best outcome for the aesthetic treatment in question.

Indications to be followed after the treatment:

  • Avoid sun exposure or any activities in the cold until the swelling goes away.
  • Avoid sun exposure if edema or bruising is evident.
  • Do not take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, unless otherwise prescribed
  • Use an anti-edema cream, if prescribed by your doctor
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Do not apply make-up for the next 12 hours

Use

The classic technique involves needle injection and can be:

  • Linear. The needle is inserted along the area to be filled and by retracting the needle the material is injected continuously. The component inside the filler occupies the space left empy by the needle retracting.
  • Serial. The filler is injected with multiple punctures, typically 4-5 per lip. The injected material is contiguous in all areas of application.

The doctor may choose to use a flexible microcannula, instead of a needle, in order to make the application even less traumatic and to allow a uniform distribution of the material. This technique allows the treatment of the entire surface of the lips, limiting the entry points at the two corners of the mouth (only one entry hole for each lip).

To be taken into consideration before resorting to lip filler treatment:

  • the use of lip fillers is simple, but it is necessary to explain precisely the nature of the treatment and the related result that can be obtained, in order to avoid any disappointment in the patient’s expectations.
  • The treatment usually involves multiple applications: the patient must be informed of the impossibility of obtaining the desired result with a single injection during a single session.
  • If during the application with the filler an edema appears at the injection site, it could be difficult to establish whether enough material has been injected or whether the filler has been inoculated symmetrically or not. The patient can undergo a check-up after 1-2 weeks in order to evaluate the result of the treatment and correct any asymmetrical areas.
  • Each treatment with lip filler should be applied in a “conservative” way: it is possible to inject other material, but if you exceed with the application you can only wait for the reabsorption of the component (possibly favored by the injection of the hyaluronidase enzyme in the case of filler is based on hyaluronic acid, which when practiced by expert hands can eliminate most of the unwanted hyaluronic deposits).

Duration

An anesthetic ointment is applied half an hour before treatment, as intradermal injections can be unpleasant and painful for some patients.

The injection of the filler into the oral mucosa generally takes place in the clinic and the session lasts about an hour. The treatment lasts 15-30 minutes.

Results

Lip fillers exert a filling action that is able to smooth out wrinkles and give new firmness to thin lips or to lips that have lost volume due to aging.

The main benefit that is offered to us by the use of lip fillers (in particular those with hyaluronic acid) consists in being able to obtain lips with a younger and plumped appearance, with defined contours, but with a natural effect that does not alter the expressiveness. Another benefit is that results are visible right away.

Furthermore, the injection of the filler is generally not an invasive procedure, so normal activities can be resumed immediately after the treatment. The results are visible immediately and are definitive in a few days, once the typical post-treatment swelling disappears.

Complications may arise due to treatment with lip fillers, but they are mild: many resolve spontaneously, representing a transitory problem.

Costs

The treatment has very variable costs because it depends on the type of product and the quantity that is used. It usually costs between € 200 and € 500.

FAQ

How is hyaluronic acid used in aesthetic medicine?
Hyaluronic acid is injected in very small doses into the affected regions using a syringe with a very thin needle.
Is the aesthetic result permanent?
Hyaluronic acid is not a permanent filler. This means that once injected, the product is progressively metabolized and then reabsorbed by the body with varying times depending on the area treated and the type of preparation used.
What are the contraindications?
The complications that arise can be: ● Superficial necrosis due to congestion of the vessels. ● Transient whitening of the treated area, usually transitory. How to prevent it: avoid exerting excessive pressure in the area subjected to filling with fillers. ● Blood reinfusion with the formation of a small necrotic area. How to prevent it: pay attention to the inoculation plan to avoid over-injection. ● Formation of a hematoma or bruising.
