Description

Capillaries are thin venous vascular structures, easily subject to trauma and rupture. They are very frequent and it can be said that almost all women over 25 have at least one area of the body with more or less small caliber capillaries. They can break, which is really annoying. Aesthetic Medicine has a capillary removal treatment available. Read more.

Capillaries appear reddish if they are superficial and bluish if they are deeper. They appear on the skin surface, mainly in the lower limbs and mainly in the thighs and ankles. They can also appear in other areas of the body such as face and arms.

Capillaries are very frequent. It can be said that almost all women over the age of 25 have at least one area of the body with more or less small caliber capillaries.

The causes are several:

  • Water retention: the excess fluids accumulated in the capillaries break the walls and transform the capillary itself into a small varice
  • Trauma: mechanical injuries, even light ones (energetic massages, waxing ..) which can lead to the formation of telangiectasia
  • Hormonal disorders: in women this hormonal variation causes the formation of superficial venous lesions mainly during menstruation and in women who take the pill
  • Thermal shocks
  • Inheritance.

How does Aesthetic Medicine work for capillary removal? High intensity pulsed light and laser are also successfully used for the treatment of broken capillaries of the face (such as couperose) and body (such as telangiectasias). Phototherapy is a delicate, painless and risk-free treatment from thermal damage, achievable in one, maximum six, sessions of a few minutes.

Indications

One of the most common treatments for broken capillaries is precisely the laser. In aesthetic medicine this type of treatment is also used to eliminate angiomas, erythrosis and telangiectasias. The process by which they are eliminated is very simple, even if the area to be treated is very large. To undergo this surgery it is necessary that the color of the skin tends to light, and therefore it is highly recommended to undergo the sessions during the winter period. Not all skin types can undergo laser and pulsed light treatment.

For high phototypes (IV-V) the capillary sclerotization (chemical treatment) is mandatory.

Furthermore, the treatment cannot be performed on tanned skin.

Use

Before undergoing a treatment of this type, it is essential to analyze the patient’s medical history and establish the number of sessions required and the total duration of the procedure. We can then proceed with the first session. The laser acts with selective photothermolysis, that is, it acts on the affected capillaries without involving the surrounding areas. However, if the problems that caused the capillaries to rupture are not eliminated at the base, it is possible for other capillaries to rupture in areas close to those treated with the laser.

The pulsed light and the laser both act according to the principle of selective photothermolysis, that is, hitting only the chromatic target, hemoglobin. The target therefore will be the dark color of the vein which, by attracting the light beam, will immediately coagulate, leaving the surrounding tissues intact.

Before starting the procedure, a special gel is applied which acts both as a conductor of light energy and as a skin protector. The pulses of light are then emitted by the handpiece at regular intervals. The pulsed light equipment is set with a sequence of rapid pulses, the duration and depth of action of which vary depending on the type of capillaries but also on the type of skin.

Each spot of light covers an area of about 5 square cm.

In this case, therefore, the target will be the dark color of the vein which, attracting the light beam, will be immediately coagulated, leaving the surrounding tissues intact.

The treatment involves the positioning of the laser handpiece on the skin and then the repetition of the impulses necessary to determine the closure of the capillaries present on the area to be treated.

Duration

The duration of the laser capillary removal treatment depends on the size of the area to be treated. Since it is a very effective treatment for this type of blemish, the first results will be visible 1-2 months after the last session. The duration of the treatment ranges from half an hour to a maximum of one hour, depending on the size of the area to be treated. Although the treatment does not require any anesthesia, it is possible to undergo skin cooling, since during the operation it is possible to suffer from some pain or discomfort.

Once the slight redness decreases, more will be absorbed.

Results

As it is a minimally invasive treatment, there are no important contraindications to take into consideration. The only effects that could develop are: pain sensation during therapy, crusting and skin discoloration, which resolve within a maximum of four weeks. However, the problem of hyperpigmentation occurs only in people with dark complexions, and can be prevented with the application of lightening creams. Finally, this treatment does not cause any mark or scar.

In any case, sun exposure and UV lamp light exposure are strictly not recommended, if not forbidden, until one month after the last session. Regarding the effectiveness of the treatment, it must be considered that, despite the positive outcome, it is necessary to understand whether the problem is caused by microcirculation or by other reasons. Otherwise, what you risk running into is continuous therapy: once the broken capillaries have been eliminated, you should proceed with the elimination of the subsequent ones.

The treated area is red for a few hours, no scars remain, it is important to avoid sun exposure for 40 days after the session.

As for the final result, this is clearly visible 3 months after treatment, when the capillary struck by the laser is solidified and, after a short time, reabsorbed by the body.

Costs

Undergoing a laser treatment for capillary removal varies from 150 to 300 euros per session.

FAQ

Is it painful?
The treatment is not painful, at most you can feel a slight discomfort. Most of the capillaries hit by the pulsed light or laser will become immediately invisible.
How long does the treatment last?
The duration of the treatment varies according to the size of the area to be treated and starts from a minimum of 15 minutes.
How many sessions are required?
The number of sessions required vary from 3 to 6.
What should I do after the capillary laser session?
As long as the redness persists, a few hours or at most a couple of days, you must avoid exposing the skin to excessive heat sources, such as UV rays, saunas, etc.
